Food you must try when you visit Myanmar

Food in Myanmar is a big part of the culture. So you will also find various Myanmar traditional food & regional dishes. Different states have their own signature flavors such as Shan or Mon curries. Also, as Myanmar is a coastal country, you will encounter a wide variety of seafood served in areas close to the sea.

Though the flavors can be considered influenced by surrounding countries India, China and Thailand, but Myanmar food has it own unique!

You should not visit Myanmar without having a traditional food (meal) which is Burmese rice and Curry. Rice is staple in all Burmese households and the accompanying dishes curries (hinn in Burmese).

In most Burmese curries the main flavors are garlic onions ginger turmeric and paprika. Fermented shrimp paste called Ngapi provides the basic for many Burmese curries and this adds a pleasant savory taste.

Unlike western food culture where each person has their own dish. The various dishes are placed centrally in the middle of the table and shared communally.

#Shan Noodles

Shan Noodles or Shan-Khauk-Swe in Burmese. This is the dish that originated from the Shan region of Myanmar which is a region to the east but it can now be found all over the country.

It is noodle dish made with rice noodles topped with either pork or chicken. There are two version of this dish a noodle soup version in which noodles are served with flavorful broth, the other is dry version in which the broth is served on the side.

# Mohinga


Mohinga is one of the most well know dishes throughout Myanmar and it is considered the national dish of Myanmar. Mohinga is made with rice vermicelli noodles served in a thick fish broth flavored by an array of ingredients including ginger and lemongrass. It is usually comes with the array amazing ingredients, dry chili flakes, lime juice, coriander and slice of hard-boiled egg, so that you can customize the way you like it.

As almost everybody love Mohinga, you can find it almost everywhere in Myanmar from street side foot stalls to posh hotels.

One of the most popular dish, which as snack, as appetizer or can be eaten with rice as side dish.

The dish is usually mixed with fermented tea leaves mixed with combination of sesame seeds, chopped cabbages, fried garlic, tomatoes, dried shrimp, and peanuts filled with little oil and few slice of spicy chili. To add sour taste, the dish comes with slice of limes.

The dish is most popular and favorite among students as eating tea leaf salad late in the evening prevent sleep and stay up late for their study.

# Shwe-Yin-Aye

This is the dessert which literally mean golden heart cooler.

Though it is especially very popular in April hot summer days when Thingyan and Myanmar New Year time, this dessert is is eaten all year round. It is made with delicious pieces of sago, agar jelly, sticky rice and bread covered in a chilled sweetened coconut milk. Very refreshing on a hot summer’s day.
